The Ancient Art of Wood Pressed Oil Extraction

Vistara Team15 May 2026

A Tradition Spanning Millennia

The Ghani (wooden press) oil extraction method has been a cornerstone of Indian village life for thousands of years. Every village had its local 'Ghani' where farmers brought their seeds to extract fresh oil for the entire community.

How the Wooden Press Works

A large wooden mortar rotates slowly — traditionally powered by a bullock — grinding seeds at approximately 6-8 RPM. This incredibly slow speed generates virtually no heat, ensuring the oil temperature never exceeds 35-40°C. The result is oil in its most natural, unaltered state.

Why Wood Pressed is Superior

Because the process generates no heat and uses no chemicals, wood pressed oil retains 100% of its natural components — unlike even cold pressed machine extraction which can generate more friction and heat.

At Vistara, we have revived this ancient tradition using modern quality controls to bring you the purest possible oils.
